LIVE AND LET DIE ?

It’s your business. Reducing risk and increasing returns on investments is your charter. What to do with your legacy mainframe applications is your dilemma. Sound familiar? You are not alone. It is one the biggest issues facing organizations today and your inclination is to resist the change.

The collision of the past and the future is now your IT world. Are you prepared to address Bi-Modal pressures facing all organizations today? People, process, and things will converge to change your business in pursuit of new revenue opportunities.

The Status Quo. Why the reluctance to modernize? Why continue with reduced productivity, increased operational costs, and higher risks of losing key support personnel?. Is it perceived costs? Is it the fear that re-engineering or purchasing an off-the-shelf product will destroy your budget? Is it the thought that risk of modernizing is greater than doing nothing? It just might be the perception that your applications, which contain all of the critical business logic, cannot be successfully supported outside of the decades old company IT department, by a managed services provider.

Face the reality. If you are not adapting to rapid digital innovation and accelerated modernization, your IT spend will be outside of your control and in the control of the business units. If your business is reliant upon legacy mainframe applications, there will soon be a day when your organization no longer has the skilled and faithful personnel to support your business critical legacy systems.

LEGACY
ASSESSMENT

Modernize, Transform, Convert. These terms are used interchangeably in the context of application and platform conversions, and mainframe migrations. Each approach has its pros and cons, and most assuredly, disparate results. It is most important to understand every technique to ascertain the solution that best meets the objectives of your strategic goals. Only then can a rational decision on the best approach be determined.

Legacy Modernization refers to the conversion or rewriting of legacy systems to a modern computer programming language and also refers to replacing legacy applications with an ERP product such as SAP.

Legacy Transformation aims to retain and extend the value of the legacy investment through migration to new platforms by “porting” the application code or “emulating” the mainframe hosting of legacy applications on a server environment.

Hybrid Approaches. Whether it’s a modernization or transformation approach, both software and platform environments are impacted. Additionally, a combination of modernization and transformation techniques referred to as hybrid approaches may be required. Factors such as the cloud, mobility, social networks, and Big Data, are now forcing companies to look more at these hybrid approaches to modernize legacy applications and adopt new and innovative revenue opportunities.

A Popular Assessment Approach now may include a more in-depth process referred to as Application Rationalization which extends beyond the scope of a Legacy Modernization Assessment. The rationalization process helps determine best practices and best solutions for a comprehensive legacy modernization approach and for adopting bi-modal processes in the new IT era. The fate of applications is driven by both their functional qualities and technical qualities as they relate to the current state support of the business and future goals.

APPLICATION
RATIONALIZATION

It’s all about the ROI Metrics. Rationalization is an assessment of your entire application portfolio to Determine and Measure the Benefits of each Application in relation to your maintenance and operations costs. Rationalization helps your organization fully understand your environment in order to develop a transformation plan and business case for your objectives.

Control the Scope. Through rationalization we develop a complete inventory of your applications to reduce functional redundancy and eliminate obsolete applications. The rationalization process is used with a mainframe modernization or migration effort to identify applications that could be salvaged, eliminated, or transformed. When you reduce the number of applications to be converted or maintained, you control the scope of your modernization effort.

Outsource…Modernize…Or Both? The rationalization process adds more complexity over a standard modernization assessment however the end result may be well worth the effort. Rationalization will also help you determine if IT sourcing is a viable and feasible option in your overall modernization effort.

The Rationalization Process. Whether adopted for a modernization solution or to address the digital business innovations, the goals of rationalization aim to reduce IT costs, improve operations and efficiency, and level set the modernization or bi-modal effort.

The objectives of the Rationalization process are to

  • Develop an inventory of the applications portfolio
  • Map out the business functionality of each application
  • Determine the true cost of each application
  • Determine application costs by business functions
  • Determine the business value of each application-Technical and functional quality
  • Develop a plan to consolidate and simplify applications
  • Develop the business case – The Financial value for transformation or the development of the digital business

    TRANSFORMATION
    OPTIONS

Re-hosting: The process of porting legacy applications to a new platform such as Win-tel and UNIX, with a minimal amount of code changes being required. In some cases, software products are utilized to emulate the mainframe environment for faster and easier deployments.

Conversions: The objective of a conversion effort is to move the applications to a server platform and upgrade the code to a newer technology in the process. Automated parsers and code conversion software are utilized for a faster and more effective method of transformation to a JAVA or .NET environment.

Re-Engineering or Re-writing: This method entails a complete rewriting of the applications to exploit new languages and platforms with the enhanced functionality of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and appropriate design techniques. The process involves a very significant reverse engineering effort to ensure the complete functionality and business rules of the legacy applications are captured and implemented in the new systems and architecture.

Replacement: Legacy applications are replaced in whole or part with COTS products or Commercial-off-the-shelf ERP software such as SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft Dynamics.

Methodologies. On many occasions, a transformation effort may encompass some combination of these methods to best fit the objectives of your organization. Each particular approach or combination of approaches has a direct effect on software costs and labor costs for a modernization effort, and a risk factor of varying degrees.

The following table illustrates the comparisons between each approach.

Reengineer Software Cost Code Converter Effort Time Risk Technology Gain
Emulation Low High No Code Conversion Low Fast Low No Technology Gain
Porting Medium Medium Code Generator Medium Medium Medium 50% Technology Gain
Rewrite High Low* OOP High Lengthy High Latest Technology 3G/4G
Replace High High No Code Conversion High Medium Medium ERP Technology

    SOURCING
    ASSESSMENT

One of the main drivers for modernizing your legacy applications is concern over dwindling resources available for support in your company and in the market. The course of action you consider may lead you down the road of selecting IT Sourcing as either a standalone solution or as an integral part of a master mainframe migration plan. Many companies are choosing to outsource their applications support requirements to a managed service provider while utilizing existing internal resources for a mainframe conversion effort. Some organizations have decided that a conversion may be too costly or risky and have turned to managed service providers to help alleviate these challenges.

As a result, companies are now rethinking their strategy and opting for IT sourcing as the best method to advance their technology and support their legacy applications. The goal is to find a managed service provider who understands your concerns about entrusting support of your legacy applications and transitioning your inherent business knowledge outside of your department and company. In so doing, CIOs are finding ways to “modernize” their legacy technology by evolving rather than replacing, and thus meet their business needs and service levels while reducing the total cost of ownership and concerns about retirements.

Macrosoft Inc, in association with our strategic partner Blue Hill Data Services, provides the business and technical assessments necessary to evaluate your legacy systems and develop a comprehensive sourcing proposal. Our process is focused on your business objective and technical landscape of your IT environment, performed in conjunction with the support of your key customer personnel.

    DELIVERABLES

At the conclusion of our assessment, Macrosoft and Blue Hill Data Services deliver comprehensive documentation of your IT environment and legacy business applications to guide you in your decision making process. If requested, our professional documents are utilized to create a high quality RFP/RFQ which is suitable to send out for bid to potential service providers. The RFP/RFQ template contains all necessary information to satisfy your goals for identifying best practice sourcing solutions and for transitioning your IT applications support services to a qualified service provider.

    DISCOVERY
    PROCESS

During the Discovery phase, we determine the scope and size of the support effort to gain a complete understanding of your applications and environment. We determine the existing total cost of IT ownership (TCO) and we frame our customers’ goals to define:

  • The support staff required to meet SLAs
  • The Optimum Service Model
  • The business knowledge transfer timeframe and process
  • The Transition timeframe and process
  • The Discovery phase also includes a review of the workflow processes through Customer Services, Account Management, Operations and Production Support. A typical assessment and review process usually requires a 3-4 week period. The timeframe and total effort though is dependent upon the number of resources involved and the scope and size of the environment.
